LASER TREATMENT

Class 4 Laser Therapy in Surrey

Class 4 laser therapy at Key Osteopaths in West Byfleet, Surrey. Our clinic uses the LightForce FXi 15W, a professional high-intensity therapeutic laser, as an additional option within our osteopathic services.

Also known as high-intensity laser therapy (HILT), this non-invasive approach has been studied for its potential role in managing certain types of musculoskeletal pain.

Whether you’re experiencing muscle discomfort, a sports-related injury, tendon pain or persistent stiffness, our osteopaths can assess your symptoms and discuss whether laser treatment is appropriate.

All osteopaths at Key Osteopaths are trained in Class 4 laser therapy.

Treatment is available for £20 when added to an osteopathic appointment or £50 as a standalone laser session.

What Is Class 4 Laser Therapy?

Class 4 laser therapy delivers controlled light energy to a selected treatment area using a specialist medical device.

Unlike surgical lasers, therapeutic lasers are not intended to cut or remove tissue. The approach is associated with photobiomodulation, a field of research examining how light interacts with biological tissues.

Some light energy can be absorbed by molecules within cells. Researchers have investigated whether these interactions influence cellular signalling and processes associated with inflammation and pain.

Clinical studies have reported improvements in certain musculoskeletal pain outcomes, although the strength of evidence varies considerably.

Our LightForce FXi 15W Laser

We use the LightForce FXi 15W, a professional Class 4 therapeutic laser developed by LightForce, part of Enovis.

The device delivers up to 15 watts of laser power and includes:

Influence Technology, providing preset treatment protocols.
Contact-application technology designed for targeted light delivery.
Adjustable settings for use by appropriately trained clinicians.
Class 4 lasers can operate at higher power outputs than many low-level laser devices. However, greater power does not automatically produce better clinical outcomes.

The appropriate treatment settings, assessment findings and safety precautions are more important than the equipment’s power rating alone.

What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Be Considered For?

High-intensity laser therapy has been investigated for various musculoskeletal problems. Not every condition has the same supporting evidence, and treatment suitability depends on your symptoms, medical history and clinical findings.

Our osteopaths will explain whether laser therapy has a potential role alongside other appropriate management options.

Muscle Pain, Soft Tissue Injuries and Sports Rehabilitation

Muscle strains, repetitive activity and exercise-related injuries can cause tenderness, stiffness and discomfort when moving.

Returning to sport or exercise may require changes in activity, strengthening, mobility exercises and a suitable rehabilitation programme.

Research has examined laser therapy for selected musculoskeletal pain conditions. Where appropriate, it may be considered alongside osteopathic care and rehabilitation, rather than as a replacement for them.

Our approach to osteopathic treatment considers how movement, physical activity and other factors may contribute to your symptoms.

Tendon Pain, Gluteal Tendinopathy and Hip Discomfort

Tendon-related pain can develop through repeated loading, overuse or changes in physical activity.

Examples include tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy and gluteal tendinopathy.

Gluteal tendinopathy commonly causes discomfort around the outside of the hip, sometimes making walking, climbing stairs or lying on the affected side uncomfortable.

Pain around the buttock may also be attributed to piriformis syndrome, although similar symptoms can arise from the hip, lower back or irritated nerves.

Our osteopaths can assess the area and discuss suitable management, including strengthening exercises and activity modification. Evidence for the additional benefit of laser therapy in individual tendon conditions remains uncertain.

Learn more about our hip pain treatment and sciatica treatment services.

TMJ Disorders, Jaw Pain and Facial Discomfort

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can cause jaw pain, clicking, muscle tension and difficulty opening the mouth comfortably.

Research has investigated both high-intensity and low-level laser therapy for certain jaw-related pain conditions. Some studies have reported improvements, although methods vary and findings cannot automatically be applied to the LightForce FXi 15W.

Our dedicated TMJ and jaw pain treatment service considers jaw movement, muscular tension and other possible contributors to symptoms.

Facial pain can also have neurological causes, including trigeminal neuralgia. This condition requires appropriate medical assessment, and laser treatment should not replace established specialist care.

Patients experiencing jaw or facial discomfort can contact our team to discuss the appropriate assessment.

Back, Neck and Shoulder Pain

Back, neck and shoulder discomfort may arise from muscles, joints, tendons or other structures.

High-intensity laser therapy has been investigated for certain musculoskeletal pain conditions affecting these areas, although clinical outcomes vary.

At Key Osteopaths, treatment recommendations follow an individual assessment rather than assuming one approach suits every problem.

What Happens During a Laser Therapy Appointment?

Laser therapy begins with reviewing your symptoms and ensuring the treatment is suitable for you.

1. Assessment and Consultation

Our osteopaths will discuss your medical history, symptoms and goals, examines the relevant area and considers whether laser therapy or another approach is appropriate.

2. Preparation and Safety Checks

Your practitioner explains the procedure and reviews relevant precautions.

Everyone in the controlled treatment area must wear suitable laser-protective eyewear during treatment.

3. Laser Application

The clinician applies the laser handpiece using settings selected for the treatment protocol.

Some people notice warmth during application. Tell your osteopath immediately if the area becomes excessively hot or uncomfortable.

The duration depends on the area and selected treatment settings.

4. Aftercare and Rehabilitation

Your osteopath may recommend exercises, movement advice or activity adjustments relevant to your symptoms.

Further appointments are recommended according to individual clinical needs and treatment response.

Patient Reviews

Real Stories. Real Results.

  • I was seen by Anna initially because I had hurt my neck so badly that I was unable to pick up my baby from the floor. In tears on the phone she managed to get me an appointment that day, and she worked her magic, I could move my neck on the way out and the next day the pain had gone. Since then I have seen her regularly (my choice) as she is so fantastic. Very professional, gentle and lovely. Thank you so much!

Anna is a delightful and competent professional who gives first rate, comprehensive treatment at every visit. I went in as a “wonky donkey” and walked out feeling six foot tall with a normal gait in my first visit! I have given her practice details out to many of my friends. Also, her new treatment rooms are a relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle – an excellent place for monthly maintenance.

  • I have seen Anna regularly for a few years and every time I leave the practice I feel relaxed, straighter and pain free. Typically carrying stress in my back, Anna not only treats the area of pain, but has a holistic approach, and gives advice on exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques to take away. She knows just what you need: a specific adjustment after massage to release tension, to a ‘maintenance session’ and five minute relax at the end. Anna has treated the whole family with various injuries and growing pains and I can not recommend her enough!

I have been seeing Anna for a few years now after struggling with migraines. She has not only helped me immensely but was the first person I’d seen to get to the root of the problem. Along with being a brilliant therapist, her advice and aftercare is invaluable. I can’t recommend the clinic highly enough

Having suffered a neck injury during my rugby career I did the rounds with various recommended osteopaths with limited success. Then by chance I visited Anna in West Byfleet and the problem was sorted in 2 sessions . Now as soon as the symptoms appear they are deal will professionally and quickly – highly recommended.

Iv been to see Anna on a number of occasions with a degenerative disc in my lower back. Before having an MRI scan to confirm the issue, Anna knew exactly what was wrong and spent a few sessions helping me regain some movement as it was so locked. I now go and see her every few weeks for maintenance. Anna is fabulous at what she does and I’m so glad I found her! I couldn’t recommend her highly enough!

Laser Therapy Alongside Osteopathic Treatment

Laser therapy is one of several treatment options that may be considered within our broader approach to musculoskeletal care.

Osteopathic assessment considers your movement, symptoms, medical history and daily activities rather than focusing exclusively on the uncomfortable area.

Depending on your needs, care may involve:

  • Hands-on osteopathic techniques
  • Joint and muscle movement assessment
  • Strengthening and rehabilitation exercises
  • Posture and activity advice
  • Sports injury rehabilitation
  • Guidance on managing everyday symptoms

Research has examined laser therapy combined with exercise and physical treatments, although whether it produces additional clinically meaningful benefit remains uncertain.

Our focus is on understanding your individual needs and selecting suitable care.

Is Class 4 Laser Therapy Safe?

Class 4 laser therapy is non-invasive, but it involves high-powered equipment and requires appropriate training and safety precautions.

Incorrect application can cause injury, particularly to the eyes. Suitable protective eyewear, careful treatment settings and appropriate safety screening are essential.

Laser therapy is not suitable for every person or treatment area.

Your osteopath will review relevant medical conditions, medication and other precautions before proceeding. Please mention any possibility of pregnancy or significant changes in your health.

What Does the Clinical Research Say?

A 2023 systematic review reported improvements in pain and function in some studies of high-intensity laser therapy for musculoskeletal conditions.

A 2026 systematic review also found modest pain improvements in certain comparisons, although the certainty of evidence was predominantly very low.

Findings from research involving other laser devices and protocols cannot automatically be applied to the FXi 15W. Individual results cannot be guaranteed.

NICE guideline NG226 recommends against offering laser therapy for osteoarthritis because there is insufficient evidence of benefit.

We believe treatment decisions should reflect both the available research and your individual circumstances.
