Headache Specialists in West Byfleet

Key Osteopaths specialise in treating headaches and migraine prevention with the use of osteopathy – a holistic therapy that aims to treat not just the issue but the broader reason as to why that issue has occurred.

Headaches can be a result of inflammation, poor movement in your joints, or muscular tension. We will take your blood pressure if you come in with a headache as this can be a major cause. You will be asked some questions to screen for any ‘red flags’ before treatment.

What is an osteopathic treatment for headache like?

There is a common science behind each type of headaches. While the pain is experienced in the head, the cause is often a somewhere else in the body. The issue could be the result of a sudden trauma, build up of poor posture, sinus problems, jaw issues, or a variety of other factors.

Osteopathy uses palpation, manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of your joints and relieve muscle tension. Research has found that osteopathy is effective in treating many types of headaches, especially those that have a biomechanical trigger. Pain relief medication such as paracetamol may relieve symptoms, but osteopathy will look to address the cause of the headache and correct the underlying issue.

 Types of Headaches

The three main types of headaches are:

  1. Tension headaches are the most common type that affects 60-80% of the population. These are often associated with mental stress and/or postural tension.
  2. Migraines are the next most common type of headache, although females are twice as likely as men to suffer. There are many causes, including issues in the upper neck.
  3. Cervicogenic headaches occur when pain is referred from a specific source in the neck, up into the head. They often cause pain around the eyes and on one side of the neck or head.
